In addition to Georgia, several neighboring states were ravaged by the April 27 storm system. The first night alone, more than 1,600 people sought refuge in 65 Red Cross shelters across the south.  Alabama was the hardest hit, with thousands of homes damaged or destroyed. The Red Cross has sent disaster workers, supplies, blood products, and equipment into the state. 

  • Between 1,000 and 1,500 homes have been severely damaged or destroyed. Damage was centered in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa.
  • The Red Cross opened 19 shelters with 640 overnight stays.
  • The focus of Red Cross response is feeding, sheltering and disaster assessment.
  • The Red Cross mobilized 40 emergency response vehicles to assist with feeding, relief supply distribution, and medical and mental health outreach throughout affected areas.
  • Communication infrastructure has been severely damaged, but two Red Cross emergency communication response vehicles are assisting with communication needs.
  • 25,000 shelf stable meals pulled from our warehouses and are being delivered
  • Deployed a mobile kitchen that can serve up to 20,000 meals/day.
