Chile Earthquake
The United Way system in Latin America has mobilized to respond to the catastrophic earthquake that hit Chile on the morning of February 27. United Way’s local organization in Chile and other United Way members in the Latin American region have mobilized their staff, volunteer leaders and resources in response, and will work together to determine the most pressing long-term recovery needs.
Haiti Earthquake
We are deeply concerned with the situation in Haiti and the millions of people affected by the recent earthquake. Because there is not a United Way in Haiti, United Way Worldwide is working through its members and other partners in Haiti to respond. The Caribbean Council is assessing needs and opportunities to begin the long-term recovery, as well as to ensure that donations are invested in the most effective nonprofit agencies providing services in Haiti.
Our role
United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta supports long-term recovery efforts to rebuild lives and infrastructure devastated by the disaster in Haiti, and to help residents address educational, financial and health-related challenges. We are in close communications with our community stakeholders, including the state and federal governments, American Red Cross and other organizations active in Haiti.
We are focused on emergency relief, long-term recovery, and resettlement and potential migration to Georgia. After more definitive information is received, we will consider holding a community meeting to hear from the key rescue and recovery organizations working in Haiti to determine how we collectively can help.
